Search engines really came into play in the early 1990`s. From 1993 through to 2004 there has been a search engine `boom`.

The number of search engines is still relatively small in comparison to the size of the internet and the amount of websites and webmasters.

This in itself is a sure sign that a successful search engine popular with the public is not an easy task to create, however below are some of the more popular ones:

1994 – InforSeek, Lycos
1995 – Excite, AltaVista
1996 – Dogpile, Inktomi, Ask
1997 – Norther Light
1998 – Google
1999 – AllTheWeb
2000 – Teomi
2001 – Baidu
2002 – Objects Search
2004 – Yahoo, Msn
