Search Engine Index (Indexing)

A search engine index relates to all the web pages a search engine has crawled and stored.

The term index is also related to the indexing of a web page by the search engines. When a search engine indexes a web page it basically lists the web page within its results.

Each search engine indexes web pages in slightly different ways according to its algorithm, some might index web pages more regularly than others and some search engines might index more web pages than others.

The index of a web page by a search engine does not necessarily mean that page will now rank high for a chosen search phrase.
