Search engine positioning is related to the position of a website in regards to a relevant keyword / key phrase being used on a search engine.
For example for the search phrase `widgets` the website widgetsales.com might be positioned on the first page in position 3, this would be its search engine position.
The position of a website for a specific term depends on the search engine algorithm of determining the relevance of the website for that term. Search engines do this using their unique algorithms.
The use of search engine optimisation can help produce better positions on the SERPs.
